Cheryl Reeve’s Latest Accolade

Minnesota Lynx head coach and president of basketball operations, Cheryl Reeve, has secured her third Basketball Executive of the Year award. The award, decided by those who manage WNBA teams, ties her with Atlanta Dream’s Dan Padover for the most selections in its history.

Reeve’s recognition came shortly after the Lynx faced a disappointing playoff sweep against the New York Liberty. Nonetheless, 13 ballots favored Reeve over Padover’s 11 and Golden State’s Ohemaa Nyanin’s eight. This endorsement reflects her standing among her peers.

Reeve’s Political Advocacy

Reeve is an outspoken advocate within the league. Her colleagues appreciate her leadership despite her political statements, such as advocating for males in women’s sports. These views are integral to her representation of the franchise.

“They don’t want transgender people to exist.”

Reeve’s words highlight her stance on gender inclusion in sports, which remains a contentious topic within the WNBA.

Draft Decisions and Trades

Reeve’s decision to draft Olivia Miles with the No. 2 pick in 2026 proved crucial. Miles excelled by winning Rookie of the Year and setting a rookie scoring record, benefiting from Dallas Wings’ choice to select Azzi Fudd over Miles. Miles’ impressive stats made her a stronger asset than Fudd.

Reeve’s trades also played a role in shaping the team. Strategic moves with Chicago Sky allowed Minnesota to acquire valuable picks, reinforcing Reeve’s acumen in team building. Natasha Howard’s signing further bolstered Minnesota’s roster.

Playoff Performance

Despite regular-season success, Minnesota faltered in the playoffs as a top seed eliminated by an eighth-seeded team. Reeve’s track record includes four championships, but recent playoff outcomes prompt scrutiny.

Reeve’s focus extends beyond team performance, encompassing her broader leadership and influence. Her recognition underscores the WNBA’s acknowledgment of her leadership, including her handling of political controversies.
