The upcoming election for the Lake County Council will not feature any incumbents for the first two seats on the ballot. Two fresh candidates are competing to replace Democratic District 1 Councilman Dave Hamm, who is retiring after 11 years.
District 1 Race
Democrat Christina Signorelli from Hammond is a realtor and economic development professional. She is also president of the Lake County Young Democrats. She faces Republican James Lietz from Munster, a former Hammond Police officer and current security guard at the Federal Courthouse in Hammond.
Signorelli has outlined four primary objectives if elected:
- Improving public safety and crime prevention.
- Repairing infrastructure without burdening taxpayers.
- Enhancing green infrastructure and mitigation efforts.
- Upgrading technology for better transparency.
Signorelli emphasizes the use of tax-increment financing and grants, highlighting that economic decisions are not simply black-and-white. On data centers, she advocates for an individualistic approach, considering both benefits and consequences, and stresses the need for NIPSCO utility upgrades and transparency.
In contrast, Lietz, who initially planned to run for State Representative, entered the county council race after encouragement from colleagues in both parties. He opposes the adoption of Cook County policies in Lake County. His priorities include:
- Enhancing public safety.
- Reviewing county operations and spending.
- Coordinating with municipalities for income-tax transitions.
- Expanding the tax base through sustainable development.
Both candidates view data centers with caution, suggesting careful evaluation based on impacts on infrastructure and community quality of life.
District 2 Race
The race for District 2 sees Gary At-Large Councilman Darren Washington, a Democrat, facing off against Republican Bradley Hutchison. Washington is known for seeking community support against rising utility rates imposed by NIPSCO. Meanwhile, Hutchison, motivated by anti-corruption and fiscal responsibility, opposes data centers and advocates for tax system reforms.
Hutchison criticizes the alleged misuse of funds within the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and other offices, and stands firmly against the establishment of data centers, citing increased electricity costs.
These new candidates and their platforms are set to bring significant changes to the Lake County Council, with a focus on development, economic management, and public safety.
