The mayor of San Antonio has voiced her support for the cancellation of a Fourth of July concert by Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West. This comes after several of his performances in Europe were canceled following protests over antisemitic actions.
Gina Ortiz Jones, the mayor, expressed on social media her opposition to hosting Ye in the Alamodome, a facility funded by the city. ‘San Antonio should not host someone with a record of hate speech and antisemitism, especially not on July 4th, our Nation’s 250th birthday,’ she stated, emphasizing that confronting antisemitism is crucial for achieving a more united nation.
Ye’s representative declined to comment on the matter.
The rapper’s concert at the Alamodome, which accommodates over 70,000 attendees, is part of his tour promoting the latest album, ‘Bully.’ Ye has faced criticism for antisemitic actions over the years, including the release of a song titled ‘Heil Hitler’ and selling merchandise with swastikas. In 2022, he posted on social media, stating, ‘I’m going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE.’
Although Ye apologized in 2023 for his actions, he recanted the apology two years later. In January, he published a full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal, expressing regret again and citing untreated bipolar disorder as a factor. European officials find his apology lacking.
Italian officials canceled Ye’s July concert due to security concerns and objections from local Jewish leaders. In April, the UK government prevented his entry for concerts due to his antisemitism history. Poland and a Swiss soccer club also canceled June concerts, while France contemplated banning his Marseille show, leading to its cancellation.
Ye performed for nearly 40,000 fans in the Netherlands, where attendees seemed more focused on his music than his past actions. ‘I’m here for the music, not for his point of view,’ remarked one concertgoer.
In April, Ye successfully held two sold-out performances at SoFi Stadium, near Los Angeles. Upcoming concerts are scheduled for Spain, Portugal, Albania, and Chicago.
He is set to perform soon at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The state’s senior senator, Rick Scott, raised concerns in an open letter to the Tampa Sports Authority board, expressing discomfort with taxpayer-supported venues accommodating Ye’s concerts. ‘Given the taxpayer funding, I urge you to reassess this decision,’ Scott highlighted.
Ye’s actions have sparked global controversy, influencing the cultural and artistic sphere.
