Buffalo Grove’s Fire Station 25, located at 505 W. Dundee Road, celebrated its grand opening on September 16, marking a new era in firefighter health and safety. The event highlighted the station’s state-of-the-art facilities and showcased the village’s dedication to improving the safety of its firefighters and residents.
The new station was designed by FGM Architects, with construction managed by Frederick Quinn Corp., concluding slightly under the $10.1 million budget. The previous station, over half a century old, had become unsustainable, necessitating a replacement.
Adam Slotkus, the project manager, noted that the old station required numerous repairs over the years, ultimately reaching the end of its lifespan. Village President Eric Smith emphasized that the new facility represents more than just a building; it reflects the village’s commitment to public safety and preparedness.
Fire Chief Larry Kane and Deputy Chief Shawn Collins highlighted several upgrades, including high-speed overhead doors that improve response times and conserve energy during winter. The environmentally friendly design incorporates red and green LED lights that indicate door status. Lighting throughout the station is managed by occupancy sensors to minimize electricity use.
“Exhaust fumes from fire vehicles are managed with hoses that connect to the truck’s tailpipe, addressing concerns about cancer risks for firefighters,” Collins explained.
The station features individual bunk rooms equipped with climate controls and programmable alerts to minimize sleep interruptions. Collins stressed the importance of sleep in reducing stress and the potential cardiovascular and cancer-related issues associated with sleep disruption among firefighters.
Enhanced bay capacity and a new rescue squad vehicle, which is smaller and optimized for paramedic and technical rescue operations, are among the station’s improvements. The workout room has tripled in size, underscoring the importance of physical fitness for firefighters.
“Our goal is to keep firefighters in excellent physical condition,” Collins stated. “Maintaining fitness is crucial for their health and longevity in the profession.”
