Returning to the lineup after a two-game absence due to illness, he was criticized for not hustling on a ground ball to third base. The home crowd’s response was audible from the batter’s box to the dugout.
Earlier in the week, Contreras had been removed from a game to recover from illness. Reports indicated he was still feeling unwell over the weekend.
“I know how that looks but I’m also aware more than others that he’s a little beat up and told us before the game, ‘I don’t have everything today.’ So I’m fine,” said Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy, according to NESN. “Especially with a guy that plays the game as hard as he does and how hard he turns around first base all the time, I’m fine with it.”
During the game, Contreras recorded two strikeouts and managed a single. He chose not to engage with the media afterward.
The Red Sox, enjoying an impressive 27-5 run since July 1, are expected to move past the incident quietly. This moment reflects rising expectations for the team amid their stellar performance.
