Dispute Over Orioles’ Management Transition

The former general manager of the Baltimore Orioles, Dan Duquette, raised objections to a report from the Baltimore Sun. He responded with a detailed letter to the newspaper regarding comments made by Mike Elias, the current president of baseball operations.

Elias, who managed several trades before the Aug. 3 deadline, reportedly described the Orioles’ situation as a ‘mess’ upon his takeover. This portrayal prompted Duquette to clarify and defend his own tenure as general manager, which ended after the 2018 season.

Duquette emphasized several accomplishments during his leadership:

• The team reached the postseason in his second year.
• Orioles advanced to the American League Championship Series two seasons later.
• During his first five years, the Orioles secured the best regular-season record in the American League.
• Duquette advised against the poorly performing $161 million contract for Chris Davis.

“Our intellectual infrastructure was strong,” Duquette wrote, highlighting the career advancements of his previous team members such as Sarah Gelles and Kevin Tenenbaum.

Duquette outlined contributions he left for Elias, including players like Felix Bautista, Austin Hays, and Cedric Mullins. According to Duquette, these contributions shortened the anticipated rebuilding period after Elias came on board.

When Elias took over, the team faced significant challenges coming out of a 115-loss season in November 2018. Under his leadership, the Orioles enhanced their analytics and scouting departments markedly. Elias also initiated a comprehensive overhaul of player development strategies, according to MLB.com.

Ownership changes marked another dramatic shift for the Orioles. Allegations surfaced involving Peter Angelos’ family in internal team matters. Eventually, billionaire David Rubenstein acquired the team.
