Maher’s Critique of Avila Chevalier’s Views
Bill Maher criticized Darializa Avila Chevalier, supported by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, on his show ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’ following her victory in New York’s 13th Congressional District Democratic primary. Avila Chevalier drew attention for her comments on prisons, deportation, and anti-American posts on social media.
During a New York Editorial Board interview, Avila Chevalier hesitated to directly state whether a convicted murderer should face incarceration. Maher highlighted this indecision, quoting her inability to confirm that a murderer should serve time. He referred to her as a prime example of what he termed a ‘woke mind virus.’
The New York Times asked her, ‘If someone murders someone randomly, should they go to jail?’ Couldn’t get her to say yes for that,
Maher remarked.
Avila Chevalier’s Controversial Statements
At 32 years old, Avila Chevalier defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the primary with 49.4% of the vote compared to Espaillat’s 45.9%. Her campaign raised concerns due to her critical comments about America and her plans to kneel during the congressional oath. Maher mentioned these aspects, noting her description of the U.S. as occupied native land and labeling it a ‘disgrace.’
Avila Chevalier’s comments extended to her views on deportations, stating opposition under any circumstances. She expressed that deportation is a cruel punishment based solely on birthplace.
Political Platform and Support
Her platform includes initiatives like ‘Abolish ICE,’ ‘Medicare for All,’ and ‘Housing for All.’ She advocates for redirecting funds from overseas conflicts to more domestic priorities. Her website outlines her commitment to abolishing deportations and divesting war expenditure.
The New York Times noted Avila Chevalier’s support for abolishing police, borders, and prisons, along with her stance on seizing landlord properties.
Despite controversy, Mayor Zohran Mamdani continues to support her. Senator Bernie Sanders and Mamdani attended rallies with Avila Chevalier and other candidates before the primary.
