The Bend-La Pine Schools district in Oregon is deeply mourning the tragic loss of three young students and a teacher following a mass shooting this week. The district recently shared its grief and praised the bravery of the school staff who acted courageously during the attack.
Victims Remembered
Megan Lambert, a 25-year-old special education teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, was among those killed. Lambert had just begun her teaching career in the district. She was remembered as a beacon for her students, family, and the broader community. “She will be missed beyond words,” the district expressed.
Becky Drury, an inclusion educational assistant, was injured during the shooting. The district highlighted her bravery and continues to support her recovery.
Community Response
The community of Bend, located approximately 170 miles south of Portland, has been left devastated by the tragedy. Residents have gathered at the school to mourn the children: 5-year-old Rhoam Summer and two other young victims aged 8 and 11. Their families have asked for privacy regarding the names of the latter two children.
A memorial outside Silver Rail Elementary has become a place of solace, where mourners leave flowers, offer prayers, and write messages of hope and remembrance.
Acts of Heroism
Kaylub Giamanco, 36, the father of two daughters at Silver Rail Elementary, has been recognized for his heroism during the attack. On his lunch break, Giamanco witnessed a gunman entering the school. He acted swiftly by retrieving his secured .40-caliber pistol, pursuing the gunman, and fatally stopping the threat.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz lauded the quick actions of both civilians and school staff. He emphasized the courage of an unnamed teacher who directly confronted the gunman by throwing a cellphone and physically engaging him. “The teacher… was willing to stand and fight for her children,” Krantz remarked, underscoring her heroic efforts in preventing further casualties.
These acts of bravery highlight the community’s resilience and commitment to protecting their children and each other.
