Beauty Professional Faces Cancer Diagnosis

31 minutes ago 0

Sarah Esposito, a lash technician and permanent makeup artist, thought a lump in her neck was insignificant. She attributed her shoulder pain to work-related strain. However, scans revealed a troubling reality.

For over eight years, Esposito, 26, from Toms River, New Jersey, built a successful career in the beauty industry. She enjoyed her job immensely and dedicated herself to her clients.

In February 2026, Esposito discovered a lump in her neck. Initially, she dismissed it as a minor issue, assuming it was due to awkward sleeping. Her shoulder pain also seemed part of her routine fatigue from leaning over clients.

Gradually, her intuition hinted something was amiss, prompting her to visit a doctor.

“Eventually, I began experiencing other symptoms, including pain in my chest and back, especially when taking deep breaths,” Esposito shared.

A PET scan revealed cancerous lymph nodes in her neck and chest, alongside a seven-centimeter mass in her mediastinum. In June 2026, Esposito was diagnosed with classic Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.

Hodgkin lymphoma impacts the lymphatic system. It’s common among people in their 20s, 30s, and those over 65. Symptoms might include swollen lymph nodes, fever, fatigue, night sweats, weight loss, and itchy skin.

Esposito’s life now centers around her medical care, forcing her to step away from work. Her doctor advised against exposure to potential chemical hazards.

“Having to walk away from my career was devastating,” Esposito told Newsweek. “It wasn’t just losing my income but also losing part of my identity.”

Dr. Luke Sorrell explained the caution, linking certain chemicals with cancer. He cited common exposures in personal care products, likely affecting Esposito’s condition. More research is needed to understand these exposures.

Lash adhesives can release formaldehyde, and some makeup pigments contain harmful substances. Esposito’s work environment might have posed risks.

Treatment and Life Changes

Before treatment, Esposito made decisions about her future, particularly her family. Chemotherapy affects fertility, so she preserved her options with an egg retrieval procedure. She found this process physically and emotionally taxing.

On July 17, she started chemotherapy, enduring six challenging cycles. The side effects, including exhaustion and hair loss, were difficult. Losing her hair was particularly emotional, leading her to shave her head.

Despite these challenges, Esposito is motivated to help others. She’s pursuing a nursing career to support other patients.

Esposito shares her cancer journey on TikTok (@sarahespositoo), connecting with others facing similar struggles. She believes in balancing positivity with honesty about cancer’s challenges.

“There are days when I’m grateful, hopeful, and feeling strong,” Esposito reflected, “and there are other days when I’m frustrated, emotional, and grieving the life I had before my diagnosis.”
