Rick Adelman, a legendary figure in the basketball world and a Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, has passed away at the age of 79, according to an announcement by the National Basketball Coaches Association. He played for seven NBA seasons and became one of the most successful coaches in the league’s history.

The Denver Nuggets expressed deep sorrow over Adelman’s passing, offering condolences to David Adelman, Rick’s son and the current coach of the Nuggets, and the entire Adelman family.

In his coaching career, Rick Adelman achieved 1,042 wins, ranking him 10th in NBA history. Only four coaches – Pat Riley, Gregg Popovich, Jerry Sloan, and George Karl – coached more games with a higher winning percentage. Adelman guided the Portland Trail Blazers to the NBA Finals twice and also led teams in Sacramento, Houston, Minnesota, and Golden State.

Adelman will be remembered not only as a coach and a player but also as a mentor to so many in the basketball community, stated the coaches’ association, which honored him with its Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.

Rick Carlisle, the Indiana coach, previously highlighted Adelman’s career for his innovation and excellence in coaching. He praised Adelman’s ability to adapt strategies to benefit his players.

The Sacramento Kings also paid tribute to Adelman, remembering him for inspiring others through his humility and integrity. Adelman’s journey to becoming an NBA coach was unexpected, as he initially thought of coaching at the high school level before starting at Chemeketa Community College in Oregon.

Legendary coach Jack Ramsey noticed Adelman’s success at Chemeketa. Ramsey, coaching the Trail Blazers, invited Adelman to join his staff. Adelman transitioned into coaching and eventually led the Blazers during the 1988-89 season.

Adelman’s time with Portland was successful, including a 59-win season and a finals appearance against Detroit. He reached the NBA Finals again with Portland two years later, facing Chicago. After Portland, Adelman coached at Golden State and in Sacramento, where he achieved eight consecutive winning seasons. In Sacramento, he was credited with innovative offensive strategies.

Adam Silver, the NBA Commissioner, praised Adelman as a brilliant strategist and a great human being. Among the players coached by Adelman, Kyle Lowry expressed gratitude for Adelman’s trust and mentorship.

One of Adelman’s remarkable achievements was a 22-game winning streak with the Houston Rockets in 2008, a significant moment in the franchise’s history. The Rockets emphasized his professionalism and dedication.

Adelman’s influence also extended to his role as a player. He was part of the inaugural Portland team in 1970. The Trail Blazers recognized him as a pivotal figure in the franchise’s history.
