Balancing Personal Boundaries in a Relationship

2 minutes ago 0

Dear Carolyn: My girlfriend and I started living together earlier this summer. Things have been going smoothly overall. Yet, I’m struggling to understand the significant role her parents play in her daily life.

For some background, she is 29. She lived with her parents until age 27 to save money while completing grad school. Their closeness makes sense. However, it happens often that we discuss personal matters, and she references her mom’s opinions without prior knowledge on my part that they even discussed it.

I would like to address this and propose more typical boundaries for her communication with her parents, but I’m hesitant. I’m not sure how to approach this without causing tension or hurt feelings.

In relationships, setting boundaries involving family is important. It helps both partners feel secure and respected. If you feel the need, communicate your feelings clearly and sensitively. Express how much you value her family connections, but also explain your desire for boundaries that prioritize your relationship.

Every couple navigates such dynamics differently. Initiating an open conversation about this will likely strengthen your relationship in the long term.
