Cruise to Bahamas Diverted to Canada Amid Weather Concerns

8 minutes ago 0

The Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, carrying over 5,000 passengers, set sail from New Jersey on October 18 with the expectation of completing a seven-day cruise to Florida and the Bahamas. However, foreboding weather forecasts off the East Coast led to a rerouting. The ship redirected to Halifax, Nova Scotia, as reported by multiple sources.

Passengers had limited time to acclimate to the sudden change in itinerary. The ship docked in Halifax for around 24 hours, thus offering passengers some time to explore, shop, and enjoy harbor tours. Thereafter, the cruise departed on Wednesday evening, planning to return to New Jersey by Sunday after spending three days at sea.

Mixed Reactions from Passengers

The itinerary change was announced the night before departure, catching many off guard. Marie Durning from New Jersey shared her disbelief with CTV News, needing to quickly adjust her packing as she hadn’t initially prepared for the colder Halifax temperatures, which were in the high 40s to low 50s by day and dipping into the 30s at night.

Despite the abrupt change, traveler Jim Matthews expressed gratitude and an eagerness to explore, having discovered the beauty of Halifax. Conversely, Nicholas Meli, who traveled with his family from Toronto, expressed disappointment at missing the anticipated Bahamas experience.

Online Community Responds

Online discussions, notably on Reddit’s r/canada thread, showed supportive sentiments toward the passengers. Users highlighted Halifax as a favored destination but acknowledged the stark contrast between it and a Bahamian beach getaway.

Compensation and Policy

In response to the itinerary change, passengers received a 50% travel voucher and refunds for any pre-booked shore excursions. Royal Caribbean’s policies indicate that changes due to weather or other factors do not oblige them to refund fares or offer compensation, but they opted to provide these gestures nonetheless.
