Apple has introduced its latest suite of iPhones, featuring a range of enhancements. Noteworthy is the debut of the iPhone Air, which Apple describes as its thinnest smartphone to date. The new iPhone 17 lineup, revealed on Tuesday, also includes improvements such as advanced cameras, longer battery life, and other upgrades. These devices feature the new A19 chip, designed to enhance Apple’s artificial intelligence capabilities.
Impact of Tariffs on Pricing
This release comes in the wake of tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. There were predictions of possible price increases for iPhones, but Apple maintained its pricing, similar to its strategy in recent years. The starting prices are $800 for the iPhone 17, $1,100 for the iPhone 17 Pro, and $1,200 for the iPhone Pro Max. The iPhone Air is priced at $1,000.
These prices align with Apple’s past pricing structures over the last five years. Despite pressures to manufacture in the U.S., analysts caution that such changes in production locations are impractical and might inflate iPhone costs.
Camera and Battery Enhancements
The iPhone 17 series offers improved camera functions, including a wider field of view for the front camera and a new sensor. The iPhone Air allows simultaneous video recording with both the front and rear cameras. The Pro and Pro Max models have enhanced telephoto lenses. Additionally, Apple has extended battery life across the lineup, highlighting the iPhone Air as its most power-efficient device yet.
Advancements in AI
Last year’s iPhones introduced a range of AI features which continue to evolve with the iPhone 17. While not drastic advancements, the new iOS 26 operating system promises incremental improvements in AI capabilities. Features include taking screenshots with screen content breakdowns and more live translation options. Specific to the iPhone 17 is the ‘Center Stage’ feature for the front-facing camera.
Despite AI being a focus, Apple acknowledges the need to advance further, as past models have not fully met expectations, particularly concerning Siri improvements.
New AirPods and Apple Watches
Beyond iPhones, Apple has unveiled the AirPods Pro 3, Apple Watch Series 11, and Apple Watch Ultra 3. The new AirPods incorporate live translation features similar to Google’s Pixel products. Priced at $249, they promise on-device translation when detecting spoken foreign languages.
The Series 11 Watch is equipped with a ‘sleep score’ tracker and hypertension notifications. The latter analyzes heart rate sensor data to detect high blood pressure patterns, subject to FDA approval. The Ultra 3 Watch features Apple’s largest display and prolonged battery life, retailing at $799 with availability from September 19. The Series 11 is priced at $399, and the Watch SE will be $249.
