Angel Reese experienced an eventful weekend that concluded with an injury and a challenging game outing. During Sunday afternoon’s match against her former team, the Chicago Sky, Reese faced an abrupt injury as her left leg gave out while attempting a layup in the fourth quarter.
She briefly regained her footing before collapsing again, ultimately proceeding to the bench where Atlanta Dream ruled her out for the rest of the game due to a left leg injury. The incident occurred at Gateway Center Arena and marked a difficult moment in the match.
Reese’s performance had already been underwhelming before the injury. In the 20 minutes she played, she scored eight points and secured five rebounds. Her shooting accuracy suffered, making only 3 of 13 field attempts, while missing her sole three-pointer attempt and committing three turnovers. She ended the game with a minus-7 rating in Atlanta’s narrow 93-91 win, which was the lowest among Dream players.
“The numbers might highlight her ongoing challenge in offensive play despite her recognized rebounding skills.”
Reese is known as one of the leading rebounders in women’s basketball. Often, she enhances those statistics by retrieving misses around the basket, including her own. Nevertheless, her rebounding excellence didn’t suffice to polish the game stats. She entered the match with an impressive average of 15.7 points and a league-topping 11.8 rebounds. On Friday, she showcased her abilities by almost doubling her average with a tally of 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Unfortunately, she followed up with a rough performance against the Chicago Sky, a team that had traded her in the offseason. Her subpar performance was not a result of the knee injury, as she was already struggling 20 minutes in before the incident.
Reese’s injury is regrettable, and there is hope that she avoided enduring significant damage. Post-game, Dream head coach Karl Smesko reported that Reese remained positive, even celebrating with her teammates. Smesko further mentioned Reese’s desire to continue playing, although he disagreed due to her apparent intense pain.
“Despite Reese’s adversity, her teammates rallied to secure the victory.”
Atlanta initially led by a notable 22 points, later witnessing Chicago dissolve the lead. Reese’s departure coincided with Atlanta retaining a slim one-point lead. The match concluded with Atlanta guard Jordin Canada sealing the game with a victorious layup at the buzzer, maintaining the Dream’s 93-91 advantage over the 9-17 Sky.
Atlanta improved to a 16-10 season record, while Reese is now 2-0 against her former team since Atlanta acquired her for two first-round picks earlier this year. Although Reese might have hoped for a triumphant performance against the Sky, the result was less favorable.
On the brighter side, Atlanta’s schedule allows Reese adequate window to recover, as their next game is slated for July 29. However, with the WNBA All-Star Game approaching on July 25, it remains uncertain if Reese will partake.
Despite recent challenges, Reese continues to be a draw within the league, arguably second after Caitlin Clark. Her involvement adds excitement to the All-Star Game, and hopes remain high for her timely recuperation.
