An American tourist lost his life after being struck by lightning while climbing Mount Etna, Italy’s active volcano.
The 30-year-old man ventured into a restricted area of the volcano on Sunday, attempting to approach the summit, as reported by La Sicilia. During his ascent, he was caught in a thunderstorm and struck by lightning.
Emergency services were alerted shortly before 8 p.m. local time. Firefighters reached the hiker via helicopter, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania.
Mount Etna, situated on Sicily, stands as Europe’s tallest and most frequented volcano. It has been erupting since early August, causing numerous flight cancellations.
