A massive explosion in Kaung Tup, a village in northeastern Myanmar’s Shan State, resulted in dozens of deaths. The incident occurred on Sunday at a warehouse storing explosives for mining operations. This area is under the control of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army.
Authorities reported the explosion as accidental. They are currently investigating the cause. While specific casualty numbers haven’t been confirmed by officials, reports from local media and a rescue worker estimated at least 55 fatalities, including children.
Video shared on social media captured the devastating aftermath. A large secondary explosion followed the initial blast, filling the sky with white smoke. Some villagers initially suspected a military air raid, influenced by previous patterns of conflict in the region.
Residents like Lway Poe Nge recalled the intensity of the explosion. “The sound was so loud that we thought an aircraft was dropping bombs,” said Lway Poe Nge. She described the destruction of her home and the tragic loss of her cousin, who was unable to escape when rubble struck her house.
