Ronald LaPread, co-founder and former bassist of the Commodores, has died at the age of 75. His daughter, Soraya LaPread, a music producer, confirmed his passing on social media. She expressed her sorrow, sharing a message on Instagram along with a photo of her with her father.
LaPread’s cause of death was not immediately disclosed. However, reports from NZHerald indicated he died of a sudden medical event in Auckland, New Zealand, where he had lived for four decades.
A Musical Legacy
LaPread co-founded the Commodores alongside Lionel Richie, Walter “Clyde” Orange, Thomas McClary, William King, and Milan Williams while studying at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in Alabama. The band’s big break came in 1971 when they opened for the Jackson 5. Signing with Motown in 1972, they released their debut album “Machine Gun” in 1974.
LaPread was a vital member from 1970 to 1986, contributing to 11 albums. His bass can be heard in hits such as “Machine Gun,” “Brick House,” “Easy,” and “Nightshift.” The Commodores earned nine Grammy nominations during his tenure, winning in 1986 for “Nightshift.”
Life After the Commodores
After leaving the band, LaPread moved to New Zealand but remained connected to the music world. In a 2022 interview on YouTube, he shared his passion for daily music practice in his home studio. LaPread expressed his hope to reunite on stage with the Commodores once more.
He fulfilled this dream in October 2025, joining the band’s current lineup for a show in Auckland. The band celebrated his appearance on their Instagram, highlighting the memorable moment during their Australia/New Zealand tour.
Tributes and Impact
Tuskegee Mayor Chris Lee honored LaPread’s legacy in a Facebook post, acknowledging his roots in the city and the significant impact of his career. LaPread’s music and dedication inspired many young musicians.
His association with Tuskegee began at Tuskegee Institute High School and continued at the university, laying the groundwork for a successful career. Mayor Lee conveyed condolences to the LaPread family and his global fan base.
