Transgender athlete AB Hernandez concluded a high-profile high school sports career at the California track and field state championship. Hernandez secured two titles, claiming first place in the girls’ high jump and triple jump, and third place in the long jump. The event marked the end of a career that has sparked significant debate over the past few years.
Last year, Hernandez also won the triple jump and high jump, while taking second in the long jump. As at last year’s championships, Hernandez shared the podium with the female athletes who finished directly behind in each event, according to the California Interscholastic Federation’s (CIF) pilot program.
The CIF’s decision to reinstate this policy generated controversy and scrutiny from various quarters, including women’s sports activists. The debate intensified further with viral images of the shared podium, adding fuel to discussions over transgender athletes in women’s sports.
During the championship weekend, a notable political intersection occurred. Hernandez appeared with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer on the championship’s preliminary day. Meanwhile, Republican candidate Steve Hilton led a rally advocating for the protection of girls’ sports, emphasizing the political divide on the issue.
LGBTQ groups, such as Pride at the Pier and Rainbow Families Action, organized a press conference outside the event to support Hernandez. The gathering escalated into a verbal confrontation with activists from the “Save Girls Sports” movement. Clovis Police Department officers monitored the situation, but no intervention was needed as tensions eventually eased.
Despite the controversy, Hernandez excelled in the championships, winning two state titles even while managing two events simultaneously. After the conclusion of Hernandez’s high school career, the debate over transgender athletes in girls’ sports continues to be a hot topic in California.
The U.S. Department of Justice is challenging state policies that permit transgender athletes to compete under their gender identity, with ongoing investigations into education agencies, including Hernandez’s school district. In the political arena, the discourse around transgender athletes remains a key issue in California’s gubernatorial race.
