Shortly after the incident, Carrington referenced ‘White Privilege’ on social media and tagged the Fever. The on-court altercation began with Cunningham, who is white, attempting a fast-break layup. Carrington, who is Black, approached from behind, striking Cunningham on the head and neck, resulting in Cunningham’s fall.
Cunningham immediately confronted Carrington, pushing her as teammates intervened. Referees reviewed the play and upgraded it to a Flagrant 2, citing windup, impact, and follow-through. The game concluded with Indiana defeating Chicago 90-86.
In the third quarter, Fever standout Caitlin Clark received a technical foul after unintentionally making contact with a referee. This marked Clark’s eighth technical of the season, leading to a one-game suspension. Clark expressed hope for the WNBA to overturn the foul, insisting the contact was accidental without verbal exchange. ‘She said I ran into her,’ Clark remarked regarding the referee. ‘I’ve watched the video. It’s up to the league now. It wasn’t intentional.’
Indiana’s coach, Stephanie White, criticized the technical as ‘a bad call.’ Cunningham, who often defends Clark against opponents’ physicality, has risen in profile throughout the season. Her recent support for banning transgender girls and women from female sports has sparked protests during games in Seattle and Portland. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert stated in a memo that discussions on transgender participation in women’s basketball will continue.
