Democratic state Representative James Talarico is ahead of Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton in a key U.S. Senate race in Texas, according to a poll by Texas Public Opinion Research. The poll, released on Friday, shows Talarico with 47 percent support, while Paxton trails with 44 percent. Libertarian candidate Ted Brown garners 1 percent, with 7 percent of voters undecided and 2 percent planning not to vote.
The poll focused on likely voters and was conducted on May 27 and 28, with a margin of error of 2.8 percent. Talarico’s favorability stands at 47 percent, while Paxton has a lower favorability rating of 38 percent. Both candidates face challenges; Paxton is viewed unfavorably by 57 percent, and 75 percent say he’s too conservative. Meanwhile, 60 percent label Talarico as too liberal.
Paxton recently won the Senate GOP runoff against Senator John Cornyn. The runoff followed neither candidate securing a majority in the March primary. Former President Donald Trump supported Paxton with an endorsement, giving him a crucial boost.
Undecided voters were also polled on their leanings, with Paxton receiving 19 percent, Talarico 17 percent, and Brown 13 percent. Of those undecided, 50 percent remain unsure.
Understanding Economic Challenges
When asked about understanding economic challenges in Texas, 45 percent of respondents favored Talarico, compared to 40 percent for Paxton.
Political Climate and Criticism
Prominent Republicans, including Senator Ted Cruz, have targeted Talarico with criticisms related to national symbols, personal lifestyle, and past statements. Talarico has countered by highlighting controversies involving Paxton, labeling him as corrupt.
Race Status and Reactions
The Cook Political Report adjusted its rating for the Texas Senate race from “likely Republican” to “lean Republican” after Paxton’s primary victory. The change reflects the belief that Paxton may be weaker in the general election against Talarico.
Following Paxton’s win, Trump praised him and former opponent Cornyn, describing Paxton’s opponent as weak on essential issues. Trump expressed his intent to hold rallies for Paxton and criticized Talarico’s stances and lifestyle.
