In Wiener Neustadt, Austria, a court sentenced a man to 15 years in prison for planning an attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna nearly two years ago. The 21-year-old Austrian citizen, identified as Beran A. due to privacy rules, faced multiple charges connected to the concert plot. The Austria Press Agency provided details of the sentencing.
Beran A.’s defense attorney revealed that he confessed to the charges concerning the concert plot at the trial’s opening last month. Although the plot was disrupted, authorities decided to cancel Swift’s three scheduled performances in August 2024.
“I would just like to say that I am sorry,” Beran A. stated briefly before the court adjourned to consider the verdict.
The defendant, in handcuffs, concealed his face with a folder when entering the courtroom. Reports indicated he intended to target concertgoers outside the Ernst Happel Stadium with knives or homemade explosives. Tens of thousands of fans, known as Swifties, had traveled to Austria for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. Following the cancellations, many fans gathered in central Vienna to exchange friendship bracelets and share their disappointment.
Prosecutors noted that Beran A. had contacted Islamic State members. They discussed the possibility of acquiring weapons and constructing bombs. He also allegedly attempted to obtain weapons illegally before the concerts and pledged allegiance to the militant group. Authorities found bomb-making materials during a search of his apartment on August 7, 2024, a day before the concerts were to start.
Taylor Swift addressed the situation in an Instagram statement. “Having our Vienna shows canceled was devastating,” she wrote. “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.”
Alongside Beran A., Arda K., another 21-year-old, was tried, although his full name was not disclosed. Both men, in collaboration with a third individual, Hasan E., planned coordinated attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan 2024. Hasan E., arrested and in pretrial detention in Saudi Arabia, was specifically linked to the concert plot.
Both Beran A. and Arda K. were found guilty of traveling and training for terrorist purposes, and participating in a terrorist organization. They also faced charges related to attempted murder, stemming from Hasan E.’s alleged stabbing of a security officer in Mecca in March 2024. Hasan E. reportedly injured three other officers and a woman before being detained.
