Italian Beef vs. Horseshoe: The Debate

4 weeks ago 0

In Springfield, state Rep. Rick Ryan, D-Evergreen Park, stirred discussion by proposing a change to the official state sandwich of Illinois. Currently, the title belongs to the horseshoe sandwich. However, Ryan argued in favor of replacing it with the Italian beef sandwich, a dish known for its layered flavors and satisfying texture.

The horseshoe is currently the official state sandwich, but Ryan believes that role should belong to the Italian beef. Joining Ryan in advocating for this change was Corey Hendrix, an actor from the FX series “The Bear.” His involvement highlights the Italian beef’s cultural significance, reminiscent of the role the Wiener’s Circle plays for the char-dog.

This sandwich debate underscores a longstanding conflict between the Chicagoland area and downstate regions. While the horseshoe sandwich has occasionally appeared on menus in Chicago, it is rare compared to the omnipresent Italian beef. Places like Johnnie’s Beef in Forest Park, Al’s #1, and Luke’s continue to serve this popular sandwich. Mr. Beef stands out as one of the most iconic names, even represented at Midway International Airport.

Ryan’s proposal suggests the Italian beef should take its rightful place as the state’s official sandwich, leaving the horseshoe with a different designation. In legislative terms, the horseshoe might continue as the official open-faced sandwich, a category some argue doesn’t fit the classic sandwich definition.

As Memorial Day approaches, many Italian beef vendors may close, but other Chicago-style food stands will continue to operate. These stands offer a variety of options like gyros, brats, Jibaritos, and more, providing a perfect meal option for the holiday.
