Former First Lady Michelle Obama faced criticism from conservative circles following her recent interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” During this appearance, co-anchor Robin Roberts asked both Michelle Obama and former President Barack Obama to summarize their next life chapter in one word. Barack Obama quickly responded with “Fun.”
Michelle Obama’s reply was “Me,” drawing a positive reaction from Roberts who humorously commented, “That’s what you call drop the mic.” However, Barack Obama noticed Roberts seemed more generous in judging his wife’s answer, jesting about the difference in reception.
The interview took place at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, coinciding with a preview of the new facility’s museum exhibits and public areas. The Presidential Center is a 19.3-acre complex featuring a replica of the Oval Office and diverse public attractions.
Responses online were swift and mixed, especially from conservative accounts. Some critics accused Michelle Obama of focusing too much on herself. Stephen Miller, a contributing editor at Spectator, and social media commentator Danny De Urbina both highlighted their concerns. De Urbina expressed his disapproval, linking her answer to a perceived trend of self-absorption in today’s leaders.
Despite the backlash, the interview continued with Barack Obama reflecting on the promise of the center and its symbolism. He highlighted the opportunities it represents for people from diverse backgrounds, pointing to his and his wife’s own journeys as examples.
The Obama Foundation announced the center’s grand opening festivities starting on June 18, with public access commencing on June 19. The ceremonies extend through June 21, allowing visitors to fully engage with the new institution.
