Democrats are at a critical juncture. The Republican strategy regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has faltered, and the Democratic approach must also be scrutinized. For years, the party has offered unwavering support to Israeli governments. This support persists despite actions undermining American interests.
The Democratic Party has long advocated for a two-state solution. Yet, the failure to leverage influence effectively has stagnated progress. It’s crucial to employ this leverage now to end the occupation and establish two states, guaranteeing full political and legal rights.
A growing number of Democrats are recognizing the untenable status quo. Recently, 40 Democrats voted against military equipment transfers to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. This is a marked increase from 15 the previous April.
I endorse Israel’s security needs. However, many Democrats have wrongly accepted that American weapons support only defensive measures. In reality, Israel uses its power as both shield and sword, undermining the two-state vision and furthering a ‘Greater Israel.’ The facts are evident. Violent settlers attack Palestinians in the West Bank with impunity, often with security forces complicit.
Israel’s effective annexation of the West Bank forces Palestinians into ever-diminishing areas. Netanyahu’s government undermines the Palestinian Authority. Unlike Hamas, it recognizes Israel’s statehood. The West Bank under occupation exhibits clear apartheid characteristics. Gaza’s situation remains dire with widespread destruction and sustained suffering. Despite this, Hamas remains armed.
I have witnessed these changes first-hand, including seven visits to Israel and the West Bank. Illegal settlements expand across land meant for Palestinians. I’ve encountered Palestinian families displaced from homes. I’ve communicated with both Israeli and Palestinian families grieving from violence. In Ramallah, Palestinian Americans shared their frustrations over losing children without recourse.
Aid trucks are halted at checkpoints while Gazan children suffer from lack of basics. Once-vibrant Rafah is now destroyed. The Israeli Defense Forces used American bombs and bulldozers to accomplish this devastation.
