Ken Paxton Leads John Cornyn in Texas Republican Senate Runoff Poll

4 weeks ago 0

As Texas approaches its Republican U.S. Senate runoff election, a new poll from Quantus Insights reveals Attorney General Ken Paxton holding a lead over incumbent Senator John Cornyn. This runoff follows a lack of majority wins for both candidates in March, setting up a critical intraparty showdown. This race could significantly influence the GOP’s trajectory in Texas and determine who competes against Democratic nominee James Talarico in November.

President Donald Trump’s endorsement plays a significant role, having backed Paxton a week ago. Newsweek contacted Paxton’s team for comments, while Cornyn’s campaign chose to remain silent regarding the new poll results.

What To Know

The Quantus poll indicates Paxton leads with 52.7% to Cornyn’s 43.4%, with 3.9% undecided. Interestingly, 58.9% of respondents stated Trump’s endorsement did not influence their decision. Paxton shows strength among men, women, millennials, Gen Zers, and white likely GOP voters. Conversely, Cornyn leads among Hispanic and Asian voters and ties with Paxton among Black voters. Paxton is favored by rural voters, while Cornyn does better in urban areas.

On social media, Cornyn urged voters to keep supporting conservative values in Texas. Paxton rallied his followers to vote, emphasizing every vote’s importance.

Governor Greg Abbott and other notable Republicans like Dan Patrick and Ted Cruz have remained neutral in this highly anticipated race.

Quantus surveyed 1,018 likely Republican voters between May 21 and May 23, boasting a 3.5% margin of error.

What Other Polls Show

A Texas Southern University/YouGov poll displays a tight race between Talarico and either Republican candidate. Cornyn leads Talarico by 1 point, while Paxton and Talarico are tied. Ted Brown, the Libertarian candidate, garners minimal support. Conducted from April 22 to May 6 among 1,223 likely voters, the poll has a margin of error of 2.8%.

Additionally, a Texas Public Opinion Research poll suggests Talarico edges both Paxton and Cornyn in direct competitions, with a 3.3% margin of error. This survey took place between April 17 and April 20.

Lastly, a co/efficient poll last month shows Paxton trailing Cornyn slightly, with significant undecided voters. Voter preferences shift based on demographics such as gender and ethnicity. This poll, conducted from April 11 to April 14, surveyed 1,143 likely Republican voters and has a margin of error of 3.07%.
