According to sources, President Trump personally requested Gianni Infantino, FIFA’s president, to review the suspension imposed after Balogun received a red card during the recent match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. In response, FIFA announced on Sunday that the ban had been lifted.

Yet, FIFA declared his eligibility to play against Belgium per Article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code, imposing a probationary period of one year. If Balogun commits a similar offense within this time, the original suspension will be enforced, alongside any penalties for the new infraction.

Balogun’s inclusion strengthens the U.S. team as it aims to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in 24 years. FIFA has attracted attention for modifying rules seemingly beneficial to star players or specific teams.
