A gunman was shot and killed by the Secret Service after opening fire near the White House on Saturday evening. The incident occurred while President Donald Trump was inside working on peace talks with Iran. The suspect has been identified as Nasire Best, a 21-year-old from Maryland.
ABC News correspondent Selina Wang was on the North Lawn when shots were fired. Video footage showing Wang ducking for cover has gained widespread attention, with over 10.5 million views online. Wang later described hearing what sounded like several gunshots.
The gunfire began around 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Secret Service officers retaliated, hitting the suspect, who was then taken to a hospital and later died. Aside from the gunman, one bystander was injured, though it remains unclear who fired the shot that wounded the individual. No Secret Service members were hurt during the incident.
President Trump was briefed on the situation while inside the White House. He commended law enforcement for their prompt response. His statement, posted on Truth Social, also linked the occurrence to a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner the previous month, highlighting the need for enhanced security measures.
FBI Director Kash Patel noted that federal personnel are supporting the investigation and will provide more details as available. Wang and other news outlets have yet to comment further on the matter.
