On Wednesday, Ernie Johnson, the longtime NBA broadcaster and “Inside the NBA” host, announced his retirement at the end of this season. In a heartfelt video message, Johnson, who turned 70 this past summer, shared that he feels the time has come to conclude his career after 37 years.
“This will be my last season. Totally my decision. It’s just time,” he said. Johnson expressed gratitude for his years at the desk with co-hosts Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, and the dedicated production teams.
Johnson revealed he has faced heart issues over the past two years, which influenced his decision. “We’re getting there,” he remarked about his health, emphasizing the importance of cherishing time with loved ones. Though stepping back from regular duties, Johnson will still participate in special projects for CBS and TNT, including March Madness broadcasts.
On ESPN’s “Inside the NBA,” Charles Barkley, Johnson’s friend and colleague, expressed strong emotions about the retirement news. “That was tough,” he confessed, acknowledging the impact of working together for nearly three decades. “You’ve been our leader, our unquestionable leader,” Barkley praised Johnson.
Barkley also announced plans to retire after this season. This news, coupled with Johnson’s decision, has had a significant emotional impact on their colleagues and fans. However, fans can look forward to a full season of NBA games covered by ESPN, including a Wednesday doubleheader featuring the Philadelphia 76ers versus the Indiana Pacers, followed by the Oklahoma City Thunder against the Dallas Mavericks.
