Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been advised to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin face-to-face in Moscow by his former spokesperson, Iuliia Mendel. She believes his past connections in Russia might aid in negotiating a peace deal. Mendel, who served Zelenskyy from 2019 to 2021, highlighted his early career as an entertainer in Moscow. She argued these ties could help in reaching lasting peace.
Mendel pointed out Zelenskyy’s performances in Moscow and his interactions with Russian elites during his entertainment career. He earned his first substantial income in Russia and knows many influential figures there. Mendel explained his need to go to Moscow and engage in compromises that are reasonable and beneficial for both sides. She criticized Zelenskyy for playing ‘noble actor’ instead of pursuing practical solutions.
As Ukraine, Russia, and the United States prepared for peace talks, Mendel’s comments suggested Zelenskyy reconsider his previous rejection of Putin’s invitation for talks in Moscow. The planned peace talks could take place in Abu Dhabi or Switzerland. Zelenskyy’s earlier career with Kvartal 95 and other entertainment ventures in Russia and former Soviet republics adds context to Mendel’s suggestions.
Despite his success in entertainment, Zelenskyy’s presidency has been marked by ongoing conflict. Mendel noted he promised peace but now oversees the largest European war since World War II. Zelenskyy’s prior promise to peace contrasts sharply with the current situation. Mendel emphasized Zelenskyy must prioritize the Ukrainian people’s needs to retain independence.
The option of peace talks directly between Zelenskyy and Putin remains contentious. Zelenskyy rejected a past Moscow invitation due to active Russian aggression, demanding a meeting in Kyiv instead. Mendel asserted that personal animosity between the leaders impedes diplomatic progress.
Mendel emphasized the need for strong third-party involvement to halt the devastation.
Nevertheless, U.S. initiatives to facilitate peace continue. President Donald Trump has been praised for his efforts to break diplomatic standoffs. The White House recently announced a temporary ceasefire brokered by First Lady Melania Trump to aid civilians in southern Ukraine, offering a glimmer of hope for relief in the war-torn region.
Further efforts are acknowledged with Pope Leo’s calls for humanitarian considerations and diplomatic advances, aiming at resolving the crisis. Mendel highlighted the impact of Melania Trump’s role in these negotiations, saving thousands of lives where previous attempts by Ukraine and Russia faltered.
The diplomacy between Zelenskyy and Putin remains fraught with challenges. Mendel criticized the influence of Zelenskyy’s associate, Andriy Yermak, for adopting confrontational diplomacy tactics. This approach, she argued, has failed to achieve meaningful peace.
