The Miami Dolphins, the only NFL team with a perfect 17-0 season in the past, faced the challenge of avoiding a winless 0-17 season in 2026. Concerns were high as Jeff Hafley started his first season as head coach, with many predicting a tough road ahead.

On Sunday, however, the Dolphins managed to sidestep disaster. They clinched their first win of the 2026 season, defeating the New York Jets 28-25 at MetLife Stadium.

During the game, quarterback Malik Willis became a pivotal player, throwing two touchdown passes and running for another. This helped the Dolphins dodge a 0-6 start, which they hadn’t experienced since 2019.

The Dolphins began with a strong offense. Willis connected with rookie receiver Caleb Douglas for a seven-yard touchdown. Douglas had recently returned from injury, contributing to the early lead.

Running back Ollie Gordon continued his impressive performance. He stepped in following De’Von Achane’s season-ending injury and powered through a 14-play drive, securing another touchdown and pushing the score to 14-7.

The Jets, led by quarterback Geno Smith, aimed to recover from their 2-4 record. Smith successfully found Omar Cooper Jr. on a 52-yard reception and a spectacular catch by tight end Mason Taylor tied the game at 7.

“It was an immense relief for the team,” Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor commented, celebrating a key first down.

As halftime approached, the Dolphins extended their lead to 21-7. Willis added another score with a two-yard scramble touchdown.

Despite their struggles, the Jets made a comeback attempt in the second half. Smith connected with Taylor for a 12-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion, narrowing the margin to 28-25.

Willis and the Dolphins had control over their fate as the game neared completion. On a crucial fourth-and-1 play, Willis powered through, ensuring the win and sparking celebrations in Miami.

While the Dolphins are aware they need a winning streak to improve playoff hopes, this victory relieved the tension in the team. Malik Willis expressed optimism, focusing on future challenges and opportunities.

On the other hand, the Jets, with a record of 2-5, face increasing pressure. Despite Smith’s commendable performance with 287 yards and three touchdowns, achieving consistent results remains elusive.

As the season progresses, both teams will look to address their respective challenges and capitalize on opportunities to improve their standings in the league.
