Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has confirmed that quarterback Julian Sayin will be sidelined indefinitely due to a shoulder injury. Sayin sustained the injury during Ohio State’s recent 19-15 victory over Indiana. Initially, Day had stated Sayin would miss several weeks, but the situation has now worsened.
Coach Day emphasized that the team is preparing for Sayin’s absence for the remainder of the regular season and possibly the College Football Playoff. He expressed the need for privacy for Sayin and his family during this time. Day mentioned, “We’re not placing a timeline on his recovery. We are preparing for him not being available for the regular season and postseason.”
“First off, we’re not going to put any timeline on his recovery, but he is out indefinitely.” – Ryan Day
Julian Sayin was injured after a hit from Indiana defender Mario Landino, which caused a fumble and resulted in Sayin leaving the game with his arm in a sling. Although the exact nature of the injury hasn’t been detailed, the severity suggests he might not return this season.
In Sayin’s absence, true freshman Luke Fahey will take over as the starting quarterback. Fahey stepped in during the fourth quarter against Indiana and will lead the team as they prepare for upcoming matches. Ohio State has a bye week before facing No. 16 USC in a crucial game.
Ryan Day noted the importance of adjusting strategies during the bye week, stating, “When Luke’s in there, we need to do things a bit differently. The bye week lets us regroup.” Day praised Fahey’s confidence and competitive nature, essential qualities as the Buckeyes aim to maintain their No. 3 ranking in college football.
Julian Sayin had shown promise with 1,772 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and only two interceptions this season. His expected role as a top NFL Draft prospect highlights the gravity of his absence. Ohio State now looks to Fahey, a three-star recruit from California, to fill the gap and lead the team forward.
