Bad Bunny’s halftime show during the Super Bowl in February marked a significant drop in viewership, the largest in Super Bowl history for this segment. NBC and Telemundo audiences decreased from 135.9 million at the end of the second quarter to 128.2 million during Bad Bunny’s performance between 8:15 and 8:29 p.m.
A decline of 5.7% during halftime is compared to the 4% drop the previous year with Kendrick Lamar. Historically, viewership numbers typically rose during halftime shows.
Jay Z, who was empowered by the NFL in 2019 to manage halftime performances, has chosen himself for the role this year in Los Angeles. Jay Z has remained a prominent figure in hip-hop since the 2000s through collaborations with artists like Kanye West and Rihanna.
“…On the surface, a third consecutive year of declining halftime viewership should concern the league.”
His political activism includes distributing “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirts and supporting figures like President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. His criticisms of President Trump have been notable and include strong language against Trump’s presidency.
Bad Bunny, although not explicitly political during the halftime, is known for his anti-Trump commentary which may have influenced viewership. The NFL continues to grapple with political divisions that can be reflected in viewership trends.
A past poll indicated it took nearly a decade for the NFL to regain previous popularity among Republican voters after national anthem protests began in 2016. The message appears clear: alienating a large segment of the country can affect business.
The alternative halftime show by Turning Point USA offers viewers an option who might oppose the NFL’s political leanings. The arrangement with Jay Z’s Roc Nation aimed to advise on live music and bolster the league’s Inspire Change initiative.
The decline in viewership over successive shows is noticeable. With the Seahawks-Patriots matchup being uncompetitive, overall viewership dropped from 127.7 million in 2025 to 124.9 million in 2026. Changes in Nielsen’s measurement system might suggest a more significant underlying decrease.
The NFL doesn’t need an overtly political performance, whether conservative or liberal. It requires an artist with broad appeal that engages all viewers, keeping the focus on entertainment without political distraction.
