Few individuals have significantly influenced American history in recent years while remaining largely unknown. James Braid is one such figure. Although millions of Americans may not recognize his name, in Washington, D.C., Braid stands out at 6 feet, 6 inches tall. His presence was felt in the White House and on Capitol Hill as he advanced President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda.
Braid played a key role in pushing numerous legislative achievements for Trump, from reversing policies from previous administrations to passing Trump’s major tax policy bill. Braid’s last day as director of the Office of Legislative Affairs was marked by this success. He described the job as one of “cautious optimism in the face of all odds” in a rare interview.
Being Trump’s advisor on Capitol Hill involved managing challenges like Trump’s tendency to personally call out opposing lawmakers. For instance, Trump publicized Sen. Tom Cotton’s phone number due to opposition to a daylight saving time bill.
“There’s always a give-and-take in any relationship with a legislator.”
Braid acknowledged the tension but praised Trump’s ability to resolve issues quickly. He noted that a single disagreement doesn’t ruin relationships; however, some, like Sen. Mitch McConnell, struggled to reconcile with Trump.
Braid stressed the importance of clarity about the White House’s goals. He stated, “We’ve been able to be honest brokers and deliver for a lot of these members in different ways.” Despite Trump’s polarizing presence, Braid knew Trump is hands-on, ensuring Republicans align with him.
Despite difficult odds, Braid achieved several legislative victories, notably the challenging tax-and-policy package known as the Big, Beautiful Bill. He remembered tense moments, like a critical meeting at Sterling Golf Club with Senate holdouts, which included discussions over strategy.
Ultimately, the bill passed due to strong commitment from both administration officials and congressional leaders. Braid noted the significance of the day Trump signed the bill as his most memorable moment, “July 4th in the White House, watching the president sign the most significant piece of Republican domestic policy legislation.”
Top Republican leaders praised Braid’s contributions. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer called him “a total pro,” while Senate Majority Leader John Thune described him as a “tremendous partner.” Vice President JD Vance, who hired Braid earlier, commended his brilliance and dedication.
With his departure, Braid plans to step back and consider future opportunities outside of the government. His former deputy, Katie Bailey, is taking over his role. Braid gave her key advice: focus ruthlessly on priorities and remain optimistic despite challenges.
