Iranian Strikes Damage US Military Aircraft in Jordan

On Tuesday night into Wednesday, Iranian strikes caused significant damage to American military aircraft at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. Sources informed CBS News of the incident.

One A-10 Thunderbolt, an aircraft known as the Warthog, suffered major damage, losing a wing. Additionally, approximately eight F-15s experienced minor damage but were reportedly quickly returned to service.

No casualties among U.S. personnel were reported during the attacks on Jordan. The incident followed the U.S. attack on five Iranian tankers earlier, which was a response to Iran targeting a U.S. Navy warship. Following the U.S. action, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed to have launched attacks on eight tankers and two warships, including the base in Jordan.

U.S. forces in Jordan responded by firing over 30 Patriot missiles to defend against the Iranian strikes. However, CBS News previously noted concerns among U.S. officials regarding the rapidly diminishing stockpile of Patriot missiles and other precision munitions.

President Trump commented on the tensions, expressing that Iran aims to influence the upcoming midterm elections. He predicted the conflict might end immediately following the elections, stating, “They’re desperate to try and affect the election so we can get a nice, weak group of people in there and leave them alone and let them have their nuclear weapon.” The President remarked on Iran’s desire for nuclear capability, emphasizing its potential global threat.

Despite these statements, Trump mentioned no interest in negotiating with Iran soon, particularly before the midterms. “We’re not looking for it, to be honest,” explained Trump, acknowledging that while negotiations could occur, they are not currently planned.
