2 hours ago 0

In Bangor, Maine, a protester disrupted the final debate between Republican Sen. Susan Collins and her Democratic challenger, Troy Jackson. The interruption sparked a tense exchange after Collins suggested the protester was supporting Jackson. Both candidates had been engaged in a heated debate over various issues.

This Senate race is crucial for Democrats aiming to regain the Senate majority in the midterm elections. Current public opinion polls show a close contest between Collins and Jackson. Both Fox News Power Rankings and other political experts consider the race a toss-up.

I’m terrified. AI data centers are destroying our climate. They are poisoning our water.

This was the protester’s statement as Collins was speaking. As security removed the individual, Collins remarked that the protester might support Jackson.

Jackson responded firmly, denying any association with the protester. The exchange continued with both candidates questioning each other’s commitment to the working class and independence from party lines.

Jackson, who has a background as a logger and past experience as a state Senate president, challenged Collins on her alliance with President Donald Trump. Jackson accused Collins of siding with Trump in crucial moments. Collins, however, emphasized her bipartisan voting record, highlighting her independent stance in the Senate.

The debate also addressed significant issues such as the Iran War, immigration, energy costs, budget deficits, Supreme Court reform, campaign finance, gun control, and climate change.

Jackson secured his party’s nomination after the previous candidate, Graham Platner, withdrew from the race amid allegations. Jackson, who lost a previous gubernatorial primary, had initially backed Platner during the primaries.

Collins, the sole Republican senator running for re-election in a state where Trump lost in 2024, has a record of overcoming Democratic opposition. In the previous election, despite trailing behind Democratic opponent Sara Gideon, she won re-election by a significant margin while Biden carried the state.
