Plot to Attack Hindu Temple Foiled by Alert Coworker

14 minutes ago 0

A 19-year-old transgender individual, identified as Alexandros Paporakis, has been accused of plotting a mass shooting at a Hindu temple near Chicago. A coworker’s tip helped authorities prevent the potential tragedy. Paporakis, residing in Palatine, was arrested after allegedly planning to attack a temple in Aurora, Illinois.

Authorities charged Paporakis with making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a weapon. A Cook County judge ordered the suspect held without bond and arranged for medical care, as Paporakis receives hormone treatments and deals with ADHD, depression, and anxiety.

Prosecutors allege Paporakis traveled to the Aurora temple with a modified rifle, 300 rounds of ammunition, body armor, and tactical gear. Paporakis reportedly planned to execute a shooting but retreated when the rifle malfunctioned. Afterward, the suspect allegedly researched how to fix the gun and informed a coworker of the intent to proceed with the attack.

Paporakis’ coworkers at Taco Bell received a strange message, prompting them to contact the Mount Prospect Police. This led to a search warrant and the suspect’s detention before carrying out the alleged attack.

I want to praise and offer my personal, sincerest thanks to the individual who stepped forward in many successful disruptions by law enforcement and potential acts of violence or terrorism attacks. It is a single, courageous member of the public who comes forward to prevent attacks, said Lucas Rothaar, acting special agent in charge of the FBI Chicago Field Office.

Investigators traced a red Acura to Paporakis and confirmed surveillance footage of Paporakis entering and leaving the temple’s parking area. Subsequently, authorities searched the suspect’s residence and uncovered a rifle, ammunition, tactical gear, and a document outlining the attack plan and white supremacist views.

The found writings expressed hate and violence toward multiple groups, including Jewish people, African-Americans, and Indians, labeling them as ‘subhumans.’ Paporakis’ manifesto detailed a desire to commit mass murder and referred to the suspect as the “Aurora Shooter.” The court scheduled a further hearing for October 30.

The temple management responded by enhancing their security measures. They acknowledged the threat and emphasized their commitment to maintaining the safety of all devotees, workers, and volunteers.
