White House Rebukes Chicago Mayor’s Claims on Reparations and Crime

48 minutes ago 0

The White House responded to Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s remarks on Wednesday after Johnson accused former President Donald Trump of neglecting compensation for descendants of formerly enslaved Black Americans while favoring the wealthy. Johnson made the comments during the ‘Native Land Pod’ podcast on Sunday, discussing his administration’s efforts to reduce crime in Chicago.

According to data from the Johnson administration and Chicago Police Department, violent crime rates in Chicago have fallen significantly. In his conversation with hosts Angela Rye, Bakari Sellers, and Andrew Gillum, Johnson emphasized that public safety should extend beyond policing. This approach includes investments in mental behavioral healthcare, promoting detectives, and expanding community violence intervention (CVI) initiatives.

Johnson and Trump have previously clashed over law and order issues in Chicago. Trump posted on Truth Social, criticizing Illinois leadership for its handling of crime. He stated that the city is experiencing an unprecedented and worsening wave of violent crime and urged the city’s leaders to seek federal assistance.

The White House dismissed Johnson’s accusations, urging him to prioritize local public safety instead of pushing for government programs deemed divisive and unconstitutional. According to a White House spokesperson, programs distributing money based on race are illegal and Chicago would benefit more from focusing on reducing its homicide rate.

Since Johnson took office in May 2023, Chicago has experienced significant decreases in violent crime, including reductions in homicides, shootings, and robberies. Although Johnson did not use the term ‘reparations’ directly during the interview, a spokesperson highlighted the city’s reparations initiatives.

In previous efforts, Johnson signed an executive order establishing a 40-member reparations task force to address historical harms against Black Chicagoans and their ancestors. Additionally, the ‘Repair Chicago’ initiative was launched to gather experiences from Black residents to inform future policies.

In nearby Evanston, Illinois, a pioneering reparations program began in 2021, offering $25,000 grants to eligible Black residents or their descendants for housing and repairs. Funded by local taxes on legal marijuana sales, Evanston’s program distributed over $7 million from a $20 million fund.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is reviewing race-conscious distribution models, with plans to challenge such initiatives. The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, led by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon, has expressed concern over local officials implementing these measures for political gain.

Responding further, White House Spokeswoman Allison Schuster reiterated the administration’s commitment to ending race-based initiatives. Schuster asserted that President Trump was elected to eliminate divisive policies and promote merit-based systems. She argued that Americans are impacted negatively by policies during the Biden administration, such as limited labor pools and increased operational costs.
