Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation and South Bend Mayor, Pete Buttigieg, visited Schererville, Indiana, to rally support for U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan and State Senate Candidate Scott Houldieson. Buttigieg addressed a crowd of 275 Democratic volunteers at Andorra Banquets, expressing empathy towards the frustrations in Northwest Indiana and a commitment to assist. He noted the energy across the country, saying that people are fed up but have the opportunity to act in three weeks.
At the event, Buttigieg highlighted the dissatisfaction with the current administration’s policies. He commented on how many expected improvements under the president’s tenure, only to face increased costs in groceries and rent due to trade policies and deficits. He emphasized the direct and active increase in living costs by the administration. According to Buttigieg, Republicans have stopped defending their policies because of unpopularity concerning healthcare cuts and rising food expenses. He accused Republicans of gerrymandering efforts that did not succeed in Indiana.
Buttigieg pointed out Trevor De Vries, Houldieson’s opponent, and criticized his reaction to the failed redistricting, describing it as cheating. He encouraged Democrats to take a clear stand against gerrymandering. Buttigieg concluded with a call to action for Houldieson’s supporters, emphasizing that corporate greed has led to adverse consequences in Indianapolis.
During a press event, Buttigieg shared a personal moment, recounting how he answered his twin’s inquiry about the triumph of good in the world. He stressed that victory comes from consistent effort and dedication. The visit from Buttigieg was aimed at maintaining the momentum among Democrats in Indiana.
State Senate Candidate Scott Houldieson, of Highland, recognized the importance of Buttigieg’s endorsement, emphasizing a need to challenge the supermajority. U.S. Rep. Mrvan shared his experiences with farmers in Hebron, highlighting their struggles with rising diesel prices. He reiterated his legislative plans targeting British Petroleum and NIPSCO to provide relief for working families affected by inflation.
Buttigieg’s presence brought enthusiasm and reinforced the Democrats’ resolve to address pressing issues in their communities.
