Soaring diesel prices, lingering tariff damage, and economic fallout from the Iran war jeopardize Republican Senate seats in five major farm states just weeks before Election Day. These states are Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, Kansas, and North Carolina, ranking among the top 10 for agricultural cash receipts according to the USDA’s Economic Research Service. Currently, these seats are held by Republicans, but the political map may change significantly after November 3.
Polling averages and predictions indicate a shift towards Democrats, or independents in Nebraska. The turning point can be traced back to the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. For farmers, the war has translated into significant expenses. Nationally, on-highway diesel reached a record average price of $6.529 per gallon by the week of September 21, as reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Initially, costs were around $3.80-$3.90 before the conflict erupted. Fertilizer costs also climbed due to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, vital for global supplies.
President Donald Trump, who previously carried all five states in 2024, faces declining approval ratings. Data from the latest Civiqs tracking poll reveals net approval ratings underwater for him in four of the states. Alex Patton, a Republican strategist, observed that inflation, the war, and fuel prices are unresolved issues likely to persist.
“The GOP isn’t going to solve inflation, the war, gas prices in the next few weeks,” said Patton. “The President’s approval numbers aren’t going to shoot up 20 points.”
Where the Five Races Stand
Trump’s 2024 victories in Iowa, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, and North Carolina have seen approval dropping in these regions. The Cook Political Report, a respected election forecaster, now classifies three of the Senate races as toss-ups. North Carolina and Nebraska show shifts toward Democratic and Republican respectively, with declining approval for Trump.
Iowa’s race transitioned to a Toss-up category in August. With incumbent Senator Joni Ernst retiring, Republican Ashley Hinson competes against Democrat Josh Turek amidst sharply reduced Trump approval ratings. Morning Consult data further supports this decline.
Texas similarly moved to a Toss-up status, following Attorney General Ken Paxton’s defeat of Senator John Cornyn in May. Despite Trump’s past strong showing, his approval rating has fallen drastically.
Kansas has shifted rapidly in forecasts. Recent polls demonstrate a tightening race between Republican Senator Roger Marshall and Democrat Adam Hamilton. Cook and Emerson College surveys reveal contrasting voter opinions.
In Nebraska, Republican Pete Ricketts faces competition from independent Dan Osborn. Forecasts largely favor Ricketts, though his previously solid Republican status has weakened.
Challenges for Farmers: Diesel, Fertilizer, and Tariffs
Diesel prices have escalated throughout the summer, peaking in September. The EIA’s weekly reports indicate continued high costs impacting farm operations. Fertilizer shortages following the Strait closure compound these pressures, with market figures revealing sharp increases in urea and anhydrous ammonia prices.
Gov. Jeff Landry of Louisiana suspended penalties for dyed diesel, reflecting efforts to alleviate strains on local agriculture.
Democratic campaign strategies emphasize linking Republican ballot names to high fuel prices as an accountability measure. National and Midwest regional price data underscore alarming increases.
Potential Senate Seat Losses for Republicans
Kansas
Kansas has historically seen Republican dominance in Senate races since 1932. However, Democrat Adam Hamilton has gained ground due to trade and policy challenges impacting agriculture.
Polls from YouGov and major colleges indicate a shifting voter sentiment. The Senate Leadership Fund has increased advertising investments to counteract Democratic gains.
Iowa
Iowa, ranking second in farm receipts, showcases a close race between Republican Ashley Hinson and Democrat Josh Turek. Polls and predictions highlight changing voter interests and perceived shifts in political alignment.
Texas
Texas, known for significant livestock production, faces a challenging Senate race. Democrat James Talarico’s lead against Republican Ken Paxton illustrates the impact of economic concerns on vote preferences. Republican efforts to discredit Talarico have not yielded favorable polling outcomes.
Nebraska
Nebraska’s race is marked by competition between Republican Pete Ricketts and challenger Dan Osborn. Prediction models and polling reveal closely fought contest, despite Ricketts’ incumbency and historical Republican strength.
North Carolina
North Carolina presents a substantial lead for Democrat Roy Cooper against Republican Michael Whatley, influenced by tariffs and wartime impact discussions. Polls and prediction market data favor a Democratic win.
