The Tampa Bay Rays experienced a late collapse on Monday night. After seven intense innings against the Cleveland Guardians in St. Petersburg, the Guardians capitalized with five runs in the last two innings, winning Game 1 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) 7-3.

Tampa Bay initially took control. In the first inning, Junior Caminero and Jonny DeLuca each hit RBI singles, giving the Rays a 2-0 lead. Drew Rasmussen, the Rays’ starting pitcher, maintained this advantage for five innings, striking out seven batters.

Cleveland’s breakthrough began in the sixth inning. Chase DeLauter hit a solo home run to right-center, cutting the deficit. The momentum continued in the seventh when Patrick Bailey evened the score with a solo home run that ended Rasmussen’s night.

In the eighth inning, the Guardians intensified their offense. José Ramírez began with an infield single, followed by a double from DeLauter. Nathaniel Lowe’s two-run single then shifted the lead to Cleveland, making it 4-2.

Tampa Bay responded in the bottom of the eighth. Cedric Mullins hit a solo home run off Erik Sabrowski, narrowing Cleveland’s lead to 4-3.

However, Cleveland responded decisively in the ninth. José Ramírez added an RBI single, extending the lead to 5-3. After a walk to DeLauter, Jo Adell hit a two-run double to seal the game at 7-3.

Throughout the game, Cleveland recorded 14 hits against six Tampa Bay pitchers. Ramírez and DeLauter contributed notably with six hits combined. Cade Smith secured the victory, requiring only six pitches to close the game.

Having swept the Yankees previously, the Rays entered with momentum but now face pressure. Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field.
