The Philadelphia Eagles traveled across the Atlantic Ocean, only to experience a disappointing defeat against the Jacksonville Jaguars. This loss has drawn criticism from former All-Pro cornerback Asante Samuel.
With eight seconds remaining in the game, the Eagles held a one-point lead. A squib kick could have sealed the victory, but instead, Coach Nick Sirianni opted for a full kickoff, allowing Jacksonville a chance for a return.
Samuel expressed his frustration on the “Say What Needs To Be Said” show, placing the blame squarely on Coach Sirianni. “You lost the game for your team,” Samuel stated. He criticized Sirianni for not calling the expected squib kick, a common strategy used in such situations.
Samuel further highlighted Sirianni’s mistake as a lack of attention at a critical time. This misstep overshadowed what should have been a hard-fought win for Philadelphia, despite injuries to Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith.
In the game, Eagles kicker Jake Elliott’s 48-yard field goal put Philadelphia ahead 17-16. However, Jacksonville’s Ameer Abdullah returned the kickoff for 53 yards, setting up Cam Little’s game-winning 57-yard field goal as time expired.
The loss dropped Philadelphia to a 2-3 record, while Jacksonville celebrated its third consecutive win.
Coach Sirianni accepted responsibility for the defeat, admitting to reporters, “I didn’t make the right decision and I lost us that game.” He acknowledged the hard work of his players and shouldered the blame for his endgame decision-making.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts clarified that game management decisions were outside his control. While he pondered whether he should have questioned the play call, Hurts ultimately focused on executing the instructions given.
Sirianni reinforced his stance on game strategy, stating, “Jalen’s playing, we’re coaching and calling the plays.” He emphasized that Hurts’ role is not to make play calls.
The Eagles face the challenge of addressing these setbacks as they prepare for future match-ups.
