The Dallas Cowboys continue to grapple with defensive issues that have persisted since the 2025 season. A recent loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on ‘Thursday Night Football’ highlighted these struggles and prompted the hiring of a new coach. Veteran NFL coach Mike Pettine joins the Cowboys as a senior defensive assistant. He will collaborate with defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who is in his first year in the role.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer commented on the decision to hire Pettine. He explained, “We have been considering this for some time. We managed to convince Pettine that joining us was the right move.” Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of finding the right person for the job and expressed confidence in Pettine’s ability to bring valuable experience to the team.
Christian Parker, the youngest defensive coordinator in Cowboys history, played a role in recruiting Pettine. Parker previously worked with Pettine at the Green Bay Packers, where Pettine served as defensive coordinator. This connection is expected to aid in improving the Cowboys’ troubled defense.
Pettine retired before the 2026 season. However, after the Cowboys’ defeat by the Buccaneers, where undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels led Tampa Bay to victory, the Cowboys reached out, and Pettine agreed to join. In his recent roles, Pettine served as an assistant head coach for the Minnesota Vikings and as a senior defensive assistant with the Chicago Bears.
The Cowboys do not foresee Pettine replacing Parker as defensive coordinator. Instead, they aim for both to collaborate on addressing the defense’s shortcomings. Dallas has allowed the second-most yards per game in the NFL, with concerns about their run defense and points allowed per game.
While the team’s offense, led by quarterback Dak Prescott, has been strong, ranking seventh in points per game, the defense has been a significant challenge. Team owner Jerry Jones and other stakeholders are eager for improved performance on the field.
Schottenheimer stressed the need for trust and collaboration between the coordinator and new assistant. He pointed out, “Trust is crucial when bringing someone into this role.” The Cowboys anticipate facing Pettine and Parker’s former team, the Green Bay Packers, in an upcoming primetime game.
