Award Recognition for Katherine Maher
Katherine Maher, President and CEO of National Public Radio (NPR), is set to receive Harper’s Magazine’s James C. Goodale First Amendment Award on October 26. This recognition comes despite her prior critical remarks about the First Amendment.
According to a press release, Maher has successfully guided NPR through significant political, legal, and financial scrutiny, reaffirming journalism’s pivotal role in a democratic society. Her leadership allowed NPR to endure challenges, including fighting against efforts by President Donald Trump to defund the organization.
Funding Challenges and Achievements
Despite Maher’s efforts, Congress reduced $1.1 billion in federal funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in 2025. In response, NPR received a substantial $80 million gift from a Democratic donor, providing a boost amid the financial setback.
Maher’s Perspective on the First Amendment
Previously, Maher expressed concerns about the First Amendment during her tenure as CEO of Wikimedia, stating it posed a “challenge” in moderating content on platforms like Wikipedia. She emphasized the importance of platform rights but highlighted difficulties in addressing misinformation and media influence.
Controversies Surrounding NPR
NPR has faced criticism over its editorial decisions, notably declining to cover the Hunter Biden laptop story in 2020. Maher, appointed as NPR CEO in 2024, admitted the organization’s mistake in congressional testimony in 2025.
NPR’s decision not to aggressively pursue the story was considered protective of then-presidential candidate Joe Biden. This editorial choice has sparked backlash against NPR’s perceived bias.
First Amendment and Media Accountability
Harper’s Magazine defended Maher as a champion of journalism, while critics argued that NPR has avoided accountability for President Biden. Tim Graham from NewsBusters remarked that Harper’s award demonstrates a liberal bias, equating criticism of Trump and Republicans with First Amendment advocacy.
Graham pointed out NPR’s reluctance to feature opposing viewpoints, particularly those supporting Trump, asserting they sidestep liberal bias. He questioned the merit of Maher’s award, given her advocacy for censorship.
Maher’s Defense of Public Media
In accepting the award, Maher emphasized the role of public media in serving public interest, advocating the defense of constitutional rights. She asserted that the First Amendment’s protections foster understanding among Americans.
