A recent incident at an infectious diseases hospital in Shelekhov, Russia, highlights the potential dangers of failing health infrastructure. The death of a Russian researcher involved in the study of pneumonic plague has led to the quarantine of several medical facilities. Understandably, this has generated significant public fear.

However, it might be prudent not to overreact immediately. It remains unclear if a laboratory accident caused the researcher’s death. Additionally, current evidence does not indicate any person-to-person transmission of the plague.
