An Iranian activist, Sheyda Rahbari, has raised concerns about a noticeable increase in the executions of political dissidents by Iran’s ruling regime. Rahbari claims the regime is intensifying its oppression, threatening citizens with arrests and executions. The case of Amir Hussein Hamedi, an 18-year-old protestor, serves as a poignant example of these brutal tactics.
Recent Executions Prompt Outcry
On October 5, Alireza Sepahi, 25, was executed in Isfahan Central Prison, shortly after his marriage to Mahshad Keshani, a student activist. Sepahi and his co-defendant, Alireza Raisi, were both sentenced to death due to participation in anti-government demonstrations, according to Human Rights Iran. Keshani, currently imprisoned on a five-year sentence, pushed for a wedding amid fears of Sepahi’s imminent execution.
“It was Mahshad’s idea. I wonder how one young woman can possess such courage.” – Amirsalar Davoudi
Sepahi’s execution proceeded despite a heartfelt, phone-line wedding organized by human rights lawyer Amirsalar Davoudi, who facilitated the ceremony in prison. The couple’s vows exchanged amidst prison surroundings highlighted a stark emotional contrast. Despite previous delays after a heart attack, Sepahi was executed on the morning of October 5.
Alarming Execution Rates
The case involving Sepahi is one among several related to demonstrations at Alikhani Square, resulting in multiple death sentences. Authorities reportedly barred Sepahi’s family from burying him locally. Davoudi expressed profound sorrow and condemned the regime’s actions as retribution against young citizens.
This sentiment is echoed by human rights groups, noting Keshani’s continued detention under new security charges. Maryam Rajavi of the National Council of Resistance of Iran has urged U.N. action, pleading for investigations and intervention to halt human rights abuses.
As World Day Against the Death Penalty approaches, Rajavi called for diplomatic and economic measures against Tehran to end the executions of protestors. This event underlines the ongoing struggle for human rights in Iran.
