The Dallas Cowboys face a crucial primetime game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as they strive for a win. With a 2-2 record after a narrow victory over the Houston Texans in Week 4, the Cowboys need to improve amid an offense that has performed below expectations and a defense that ranks poorly in the league.
The Thursday night match presents a golden chance for Dallas to assert themselves, particularly as the winless Buccaneers will play without quarterback Baker Mayfield. This opportunity coincides with the welcome news that Tyler Smith, one of Dallas’s key players, will return to the field.
On Thursday morning, NFL insider Ian Rapoport confirmed that the Cowboys activated All-Pro guard Tyler Smith from injured reserve for the upcoming game against the Buccaneers. Smith’s absence resulted from a thumb injury sustained during training camp in August, which required surgery and forced his placement on injured reserve. He missed the first four games of the season before beginning to practice again earlier this week.
Tyler Smith, drafted in the first round by the Cowboys in 2022, is a notable talent with three consecutive Pro Bowl appearances and second-team All-Pro recognition in 2023. His impressive career includes 63 starts in his first four seasons, positioning him as a top-tier interior offensive lineman in the NFL.
The Cowboys’ offense, especially quarterback Dak Prescott along with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, will greatly benefit from Smith’s return. Despite maintaining a strong passing game, the team has struggled on the ground, averaging only 89.5 rushing yards per game, among the lowest in the league. Smith’s involvement is expected to bolster the run game, although the Buccaneers boast one of the league’s strongest run defenses, conceding just 78.5 yards per game.
