Americans Traveling to Mexico for Ibogaine Treatments Despite Risks

1 hour ago 0

Many Americans are spending significant amounts of money to travel and receive ibogaine treatments, despite warnings about its dangerous and potentially deadly risks. Ibogaine is a powerful psychedelic sought for mental resets, addiction treatments, and performance enhancement.

Cost and Logistics of Treatment

Executives and entrepreneurs are paying up to $20,000 for these experiences. For example, the Ibogaine Clinic in Playa del Carmen coordinates travel logistics like airport transfers and accommodation for its patients. Meanwhile, facilities like Beond Ibogaine in Cancún offer medically supervised care as part of multi-day retreats that include lodging, yoga, meditation, massage, and integration sessions.

Availability and Popularity in Mexico

Since ibogaine isn’t approved for medical use in the United States, many Americans travel to Mexico for treatment. The country has become a leading destination for ibogaine retreats, expanding into other Latin American countries like Costa Rica.

Mexico’s popularity for ibogaine retreats has increased, partly due to renewed interest following Presley Gerber’s death. Before his passing, Gerber traveled to Mexico seeking an “ibogaine flood,” a high-dose treatment intended to combat addiction.

Though Gerber publicly spoke about his desire to “rewire” his brain with ibogaine, addiction expert Dr. Drew Pinsky advises caution. He warns against assuming ibogaine or similar treatments are cures for substance-use disorder.

Beyond Addiction Treatment

While some Americans seek ibogaine treatment for addiction, others pay thousands for experiences aimed at enhancing personal growth, performance, and emotional healing. Programs at Beond range from $12,500 to $20,000, often lasting around ten days.

The New York Post describes people like Mike Stratton, a health company co-founder, who pursued ibogaine for a personal reset. Stratton underwent an intense “flood” treatment experience, leading to surfacing memories and thoughts.

“It was a hell ride,” Stratton shared, reflecting on the intensity of the experience.

Treatment effects can persist for over 24 hours, and patients may experience a waking, dreamlike state. The New York Times reports that ibogaine poses risks, including potentially fatal cardiac complications, necessitating crucial medical monitoring.

Clinic Availability and Variability

Currently, there are approximately 40 clinics and wellness centers in Mexico offering ibogaine, compared to virtually none a decade ago. Costs vary from around $5,000 to nearly $20,000, excluding travel expenses.

Facilities differ significantly; some are luxury operations with credentialed professionals, while others have more rustic settings with informal practitioners.
