The True Value of Youth Sports

25 minutes ago 0

Youth sports offer more than the promise of future athletic stardom. The experience is about growth and community, as highlighted by former NFL star Jonathan Stewart. Stewart underscores that youth sports are crucial for teaching life lessons and creating a supportive environment to develop positive habits.

Stewart, a Pro Bowl running back, coaches a middle school football team alongside former teammates Greg Olsen and Luke Kuechly. Their influence extends beyond football skills. Stewart notices how sports build a community that fosters belonging and teaches children essential life skills.

“Youth sports give your kid a community,” said Stewart. “It helps them prioritize, manage time effectively, and develop self-responsibility. It’s a place for becoming young adults.”

At Charlotte Christian School in North Carolina, Stewart appreciates the impressionable nature of middle schoolers. He emphasizes the importance of being a mentor and how youth sports give children a platform to find belonging.

“Our personalities, beliefs, and values develop through these interactions. Middle school sports provide children a chance to find friends and a purpose among peers,” Stewart explained.

Stewart’s unexpected coaching journey began when his daughters attended Charlotte Christian School. While he initially resisted coaching, the opportunity to impact young lives convinced him to join. This involvement has led his daughters to take an interest in the sport.

“My daughters enjoy attending games and seeing me coach. They engage with the sport, asking questions, learning, and feeling connected to our football-influenced family,” Stewart shared.

Football, in Stewart’s view, offers essential life lessons beyond physical prowess. It instills responsibility, selflessness, and self-awareness.

“Football teaches you to show up and provides many life lessons, such as responsibility, prioritization, and understanding oneself,” Stewart reflected.

Stewart finds joy in witnessing players grow as individuals and teammates. He shares a touching account of a player named Jack who exemplifies dedication and loyalty, highlighting the impact of youth sports on personal development.

“Seeing kids evolve, like Jack’s journey from timid seventh-grader to vocal eighth-grader, is rewarding. His confidence shines through and shows the transformative power of these experiences,” Stewart said.

Amid the chaotic reality of youth sports, characterized by parents’ disagreements and on-field tensions, Stewart reminds us that the sport is less about the game and more about the community it nurtures.

Stewart’s focus on oral hygiene underlines his commitment to holistic well-being. The NFL’s partnership with Oral-B and Crest makes oral care accessible alongside physical fitness.

“Taking care of yourself, including oral health, is just as essential as working out and eating right,” Stewart remarked.

Jonathan Stewart, renowned for his football career, devotes his time to youth sports coaching, teaching both game skills and life lessons to budding sports enthusiasts, adding his unique perspective on the significance of community over competition.
