Renowned for his dynamic coaching style, Jon Gruden, a Super Bowl champion coach, surprised many by appearing at a political rally alongside Donald Trump in Ohio. Known for his fervor on the football field, Gruden’s presence brought attention at the event held on a Saturday night.
Gruden appeared with Ohio Senator Jon Husted, who is seeking re-election, and Vivek Ramaswamy, a gubernatorial candidate. During the rally, a protester was removed, prompting President Trump to quip about the fervor of the crowd, comparing it to a football game and asserting that the energy surpassed that of an Ohio State game.
Having coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory and led the Raiders, Gruden’s public political endorsement was notable. Husted, who was Gruden’s teammate at the University of Dayton in 1985, introduced him during the rally. Gruden, expressing his Ohio roots, shared his pride in his upbringing and education at Dayton.
The response from the audience was overwhelmingly positive, with applause following Gruden’s brief remarks. He praised Husted not only as a friend but also as a remarkable player in college, highlighting his 17 interceptions and his unyielding work ethic and mental resilience.
Jon Husted’s impressive political career includes roles as an Ohio state representative, House speaker, state senator, secretary of state, lieutenant governor, and, since 2025, a U.S. senator. His athletic achievements at Dayton as an All-American cornerback and key player in the 1989 NCAA Division III national championship team were highlighted during Gruden’s address.
Gruden concluded his speech urging the attendees to support Husted in the upcoming election. He emphasized the importance of early voting, set to begin on Tuesday, and encouraged the audience to rally their circles of influence to participate actively in the political process.
