Matt Ryan Takes Active Role as Falcons’ President of Football

3 weeks ago 0

The Atlanta Falcons have appointed former quarterback Matt Ryan as the new president of football, positioning him just above general manager Ian Cunningham. Ryan is actively engaging in the team’s development during Organized Team Activities (OTAs), even stepping in to throw passes during practices. According to Marc Raimondi of ESPN, this unexpected participation provides the offense with an additional experienced arm.

Wide receiver Jahan Dotson, a free agency acquisition, expressed his surprise and admiration for Ryan’s involvement. “I honestly had no idea [he’d be doing that],” Dotson shared. “It’s pretty cool to have the legend of Atlanta out here, participating and throwing. Catching passes from him during individual drills is always fun. He’s a great guy and an amazing resource to learn the game from.”

The Falcons currently have four quarterbacks on their 90-man roster: Michael Penix Jr., Tua Tagovailoa, Trevor Siemian, and Jack Strand. Penix, a 2024 first-round draft pick, is recovering from an ACL injury and has not been cleared for full team drills yet, but he participates in 7-on-7 drills. A competitive battle between Penix and Tagovailoa is anticipated in the upcoming training camp.

Ryan’s presence is seen as a valuable asset for the quarterback competition. Falcons’ new head coach Kevin Stefanski acknowledges Ryan’s contribution, emphasizing his unique perspective and history with the team. “Obviously, he helps me every day, helps our players,” Stefanski stated. “It’s special to have someone like Matt share his experiences, having been where those guys are now, and offering his insights from the pinnacle of the profession.”

The Falcons ended their last season with an 8-9 record, tying with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and falling short behind the NFC South-winning Carolina Panthers. As the division is expected to be open again this fall, Ryan’s contributions aim to enhance the team’s competitiveness in the offseason. Though he won’t be the one making the crucial throws in the postseason, his knowledge and experience are pivotal in positioning the Falcons for success.
